Lesson Plans

Microhabitats:

In this lesson, students explore the surroundings of the school and observe different types of habitats, recording the environment and what conditions allow animals and plants to thrive there.

Tree Observations:

In this project, each class "adopts" a tree and collects data about it over the entire year. Teachers maintain a class tree notebook that includes a picture of the tree and a description of the environmental characteristics on each observation day as students draw a picture of the tree that day in their personal science notebooks. Emphasis should be placed on the importance of water, sunlight, and food as essential to the tree's survival.

Rock Composition and Classification:

In this unit, the class is introduced to how rocks are formed, where they come from, and the many shapes and sizes that they are found. A class rock collection is made from samples collected around the school and a final lab shows the concept of erosion through rock "shakers."
