Students will also use critical thinking to synthesize the information from their research. Students will collaborate with peers and use creativity to develop a multimedia presentation.

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, present students with the following questions. “Do you use social media daily?” and “Does social media influence the way you live?” Conduct the poll. Discuss the results. Ask students to share examples of the ways in which social media influences their personal lives.
  2. Provide students with a copy of the case study, “Oh No! My Sister Wants to Diet!” (See CPALMS Resource ID 219723). Before reading, challenge students to try to determine which character they identify with most from the case study. Students work in groups of 3-4 to read the case study.
  3. Pose the following discussion questions as the case study is being read:
  • What are some examples of safe health choices in the case study? What are some examples of unsafe health choices in the case study?
  • How is social media influencing this family’s health choices?
  • How is social media influencing this family’s relationship with one another?
  • Which character in the case study do you share the same perspective with? Why?
  • Why might the Green Clean Diet Trend be a helpful choice for mom, Lina, and Bella?
  • Why might the Green Clean Diet Trend be an unhelpful choice for dad and Lilli?

  Consider giving 2-3 questions per group (digitally or on paper). After about 10 minutes, allow each of the groups to share out key points from their discussions. Allow each group 2-3 minutes to share.

  4. Students will work independently to conduct research on the question “How might social media influence our behaviors about health?” Students will complete the research synthesis activity (see attachment).
  5. Remind students of how to support claims. For example, if a website says, “social media is great for teenagers,” encourage students to find evidence on the website that supports social media being great for teenagers. If a website says, “87% of teenagers admit to using social media daily,” and then later says, “64% of teenagers say they compare themselves to other people online,” this would be great evidence to demonstrate how social media influences our lives.
  6. When students have completed the research synthesis activity, have students share information from the sources with their partners and provide feedback to one another. Repeat this until each student has received feedback from two other peers.

  Students are able to work in the same groups they read the case study with.

  7. Students will work to develop a presentation with multimedia elements to answer the question “How might social media influence our behaviors on health?” If needed, review multimedia elements (see attached). Encourage students to use the research synthesis handout to develop the presentation. Each student is able to create their own presentation, but can share ideas with their partners while working. The presentation creation may take 15-20 minutes.
  8. Students individually present their research presentations in small groups of 3-4 students. Each student is able to present for 2-3 minutes.
  9. To bring the lesson to a close, have students reflect on the following questions:
  • How did the perspective of others' ideas on the influences of social media help with your thinking?
  • How can social media influence your future? Are there any positive or negative aspects of social media that may be used in a future job or school opportunity?

  Present the questions to the whole class and allow students to share their thoughts in their group. To end the lesson, allow for students to share a few ideas their group discussed with the whole class.
