• Procedure

  
  

  Introduction:

  1. Engage students in a group discussion on the importance of fundraising for community development. Show marketing signs from around the school (school play posters, vending machine ad, etc.) and discuss whether or not these strategies were successful.

  Integrated Activity:

  1. First, divide students into small groups. Then provide each group with a copy of the case study, "Planning and Budgeting a Community Fun Run" (CPALMS Resource ID#219823) and guided questions:

  • How would you design a flyer or poster to attract families to the fun run?
  • What kind of content would you share on the park’s social media to engage potential participants?
  • How can the marketing materials be aligned with the fun run’s cause?
  • How can you measure the effectiveness of the marketing campaign?

  2. Next, provide students with the Marketing Timeline Student Handout. Students will use the provided template to create a timeline of marketing activities leading up to the event, including key milestones. Students must also consider target audience and their social media strategy to reach their audience.

  3. After making their timeline, students will create a digital presentation to share their timeline with the class. The presentation must include a flyer or poster that would be distributed in the local community (schools, local businesses, libraries, etc.) to advertise the event.

  4. Last, groups will present their strategies/deliverables to the class using logical sequence and justificaiton for their choices. Classmates can provide feedback.

  Closing:

  Close the lesson by having a guided discussion that will build connections to students future careers and reflect on their learning:

  • What skills do you think are most important for a career in event planning or marketing?
  • What role do you think social media and marketing play in the success of events?
