  This lesson should be used with the Case Study "Fire Safety" (See CPALMS Resource ID #219978). This is the third lesson for this case study and can be preceded by "Fire Triangle and Fire Extinguishers" (See CPALMS Resource ID #219877) and “Fire Evacuation, Part 1” in which students create a home evacuation plan (See CPALMS Resource ID #220015).

  Awareness of safety procedures, such as the steps for evacuation, prepares students for emergencies in a workplace setting.

  Students will collaborate and demonstrate creativity as they write a fictional story that applies R.A.C.E. to a fire emergency in a school.

  • describe school procedures for what to do in a fire, including evacuation routes and meeting places.

• Prior Knowledge

  
  

  Students should be familiar with/able to:

  • Schools having fire evacuation plans that are practiced during ‘fire drills.’
  • The steps to respond to a fire emergency are Rescue, Alarm, Contain, Evacuate/Extinguish (R.A.C.E.).
  • Fire extinguishers being used to extinguish a fire.
  • Writing techniques such as figurative language, foreshadowing, flashbacks, transitions, and dialogue.

  • How can we prepare for fire emergencies?
  • What components should be in a fire evacuation plan?
  • Why is it important to have a meeting place, should a fire occur?
  • How would a fire emergency in a school be different from a fire emergency at a home?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. Begin class with a whole-group discussion to review what was learned in the previous two lessons for the “Fire Safety” Case Study (See CPALMS Resource ID 219978). Possible questions to lead the discussion include:
     • Sometimes fires happen at businesses or schools. How can we be prepared for and prevent fire emergencies at school? (based on lesson 1 knowledge of the fire triangle and using fire extinguishers)
     • How would having an evacuation plan benefit the Johnson family? (based on lesson 2 R.A.C.E. and fire evacuation)
     • What are the steps of R.A.C.E.? (based on lesson 2 R.A.C.E. and fire evacuation)
     • How would R.A.C.E. be different in a school, versus at a home? (intro. to this lesson)
       
       
  2. If students are not familiar with the case study, have students read the “Fire Safety” Case Study (See CPALMS Resource ID 219978). Then, ask students, "How would R.A.C.E. be different in a school, versus at a home?
     
     
  3. Display the Teacher Handout: R.A.C.E. in Schools.
     • Discuss how R.A.C.E. applies in a school setting.
     • Review the evacuation routes and outside meeting place for your classroom.
     • Ask students how fast they think students should be able to evacuate a school. (under 3 minutes)
       
       
  4. Activity: Creative Writing
     • Put students in groups for this activity.
     • Pass out and display the “Fire Safety at School” Creative Writing Assignment.
     • Review the directions and rubric with students.
     • Students can write their story on paper, or using a computer.
     • Assignment Summary: Have students write a short story about a fire emergency at a school and what everyone should do, using the steps of R.A.C.E. (Story starter: “It’s lunchtime at Wildcat Middle School. Students are busy mingling and eating in the cafeteria when the popcorn machine starts to sizzle and smoke….”)
       
       
  5. Closure: Discuss the following with the whole class:
  • • Has your school practiced, or discussed, what to do if a fire alarm is triggered when students are in the cafeteria?
    • What if there was a substitute teacher? How would they know what to do? How could you, as a student, help a substitute (or even a new student) if there was a fire emergency at school?
    • Career Connection: How could businesses prepare their employees for a fire emergency?

• Teacher Notes

  
  
  • The creative writing activity is designed for students to work in pairs. The teacher can set up partners in advance or let students select their partner.
    • Note: Please review guidelines for group work, such as remaining on-task, positive/encouraging team talk, flexibility, equal participation, etc.
  • Lesson pacing: 5-10 minutes for review of the case study and related discussion; 10 minutes to relate R.A.C.E. to school procedures/practice; 30 minutes for the creative writing activity; and 5-10 minutes for the follow up discussion.
  • This lesson can be extended to a second day if your class has not previously read the case study, if students need more time to write their stories, and/or if you want students to share their stories with the class.

  Assessment:

  • The teacher can informally assess learning through group discussion and observation of students during the writing activity. Students can be formally evaluated using their writing assignment (rubric provided).

  Extension Activities:

  • Students could create posters or video P.S.A.s on fire evacuation procedures.
  • Students could peer grade the stories, using the rubric provided.
