  • What are some ways we could solve a problem with a friend?

• Procedure

  
  

  1. To introduce the lesson, engage students by asking if thet have ever disagreed with someone before. Have students share their stories with a partner and then call on a few students to share about a time they had a disagreement. Alternatively or in addition to, you could share about a time you had a disagreement. Have students share how they felt when they disagreed (mad, upset, frustrated) and show them the feelings chart so they have an image in mind with the feeling words (see attachment).

  2. Next tell students you are going to read them a quick story about a couple of friends who had a disagreement in class. Read the case study, "Clash of the Classmates" (See CPALMS resource ID# 219724).

  3. Pose the following questions while reading the case study:

  • What does clash mean?
  • How did the girls feel when they had different ideas?
  • Were they able to work it out?
  • How do you think the girls are feeling?

  4. Have students discuss in small groups or partners why it is important to work together to solve problems. Make a list on the white board or anchor chart as a class.

  5. Then have students discuss what they think the girls in the case study should do to solve their problem.

  6. Tell students they are going to draw and label or write a sentence showing how the girls could solve their problem. The drawing is the multimedia element that meets the ELA standard addressed in this lesson.

  7. As students finish have them share their writing with a friend in class.

  8. To bring the lesson to a close have students come back together in a whole group setting and reflect on the following questions:

  • Why is it important to work together to solve problems?
  • What are some ways to make sure everyone in a group or team feels important?

  This lesson can be taught in a whole group or small group setting. If your students are more advanced you could have them write more than one sentence or perhaps even create a book or write some steps to solving the problem. You could also extend this lesson over the course of a few days if you only have a short time and/or want to build on the durable skills covered in the lesson.
