  This lesson is designed to be used with the case study, “Current Trends That Will Shape The Workplace .” See CPALMS resource ID# 215735.

• Career Connection

  
  

  The students will research and discuss their findings on traditional vs current workplace trends that are impacting the workplace. The students will enhance their industry content knowledge by:

  1. Identifying current trends verses traditional trends.
  2. Collaborating on how the impact of current trends vs traditional trends improve the workplace.
  3. Engaging in CTE internships for on-the-job training.
  4. Create a digital presentation from based on research evidence in magazine articles, newspapers, and online sources.

  The soft skills covered in this lesson will include interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, the ability to collaborate effectively, manage time and communicate with clarity.

• Learning Objectives

  
  

  Students will be able to:

  • Identify current trends that have replaced traditional trends.
  • Determine if and how current trends are improving productivity in the workplace.
  • Create a digital presentation using evidence from their research.

• Prior Knowledge

  
  

  Students should be familiar with/able to:

  • A basic knowledge of creating presentations with images, comments, and other annotations.
  • Prior experience in multimedia elements.
  • Literacy skills for formatting and presenting the presentation.

• Guiding Questions

  
  
  • How can traditional trends be integrated with current trends in the workplace?
  • Do you think current trends are resulting in more productivity in the workplace, home, school, etc.? Why or why not?
  • What traditional technology trends have you replaced with current technology trends to enhance your productivity in school, home or the workplace environment?

• Procedure

  
  

  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher will pose the following questions, “Who has a smartwatch – show of hands- or a traditional watch – show of hands?

  • • The teacher will form two groups (smartwatch Vs. traditional watches) and briefly discuss the benefits of the current watch/trends versus the traditional watch trend.
    • After the ice breaker, the teacher will give the students a copy of the case study, “ Current Trends that will Shape the Workplace."
    • The students will underline the vocabulary terms (AI, traditional, database, interpersonal, etc.) for reading comprehension and annotate clues in the margins of the document.
    • The student will read the case study and discuss the issues that which Debra encountered the first week as a new intern for the company.
    • Discussion Questions:
  • • • Why did Debra apply for the secretary position?
      • As a new employee, is it “OK” to ask the boss for assistance on an assignment/s which you are not proficient in specific computer skills?

  2. Student-centered and integrated activity: With the aid of the computer, magazine, article, etc., the students will complete the Current Trends worksheet (See Special Materials) with the name of traditional trends verses current trends in the workplace.

  3. After completing the worksheet with the information, the students will create a digital presentation, PowerPoint template, based on the student activity worksheet, to show evidence of their research.

  4. To bring the student activity to a close, the students will complete and submit an exit slip with the following questions and statement:

  • • • What techniques are you utilizing to develop proficiency in current trends (computer applications, soft skills and hard skills) for the workplace?
      • What did you learn from this lesson?
      • List and describe two current trends that have revolutionized the workplace.

  5. Teacher can close the lesson by reviewing the guiding questions and discussing them in a whole class discussion. As students share, teacher can probe for real-world career connections that students can make between this lesson and future careers in busines.
