  This lesson is designed to be used with the case study, “Dancing in the Cloud.” See CPALMS resource ID# 215767. In this lesson, students will be tasked with creating a presentation that educates a client on the benefits of cloud computing.

  This activity deepens student understanding of cloud computing using a real-world scenario. Students will identify stakeholders as businesses adapt to cloud computing technology.

• Procedure

  
  

  1. Begin class with a true or false activity to activate prior knowledge. Display the three statements one by one (slides 2-4). Students signal responses answering true by standing and false by remaining seated. Encourage students to share their thought processes.

  • The neighborhood ice cream shop can increase profit without using cloud technology.
  • Cloud computing requires businesses to purchase expensive hardware.
  • All cloud computing services are the same.

  2. Pass out "Case Study: Dancing in the Cloud" (see CPALMS resource ID #215767) and Student Proposal Template Handout.

  3. Introduce case study "Dancing in the Cloud." Explain that Peyton is an entrepreneur who needs to understand cloud computing to make informed decisions about her business. Lila, a Cloud Specialist, must help Peyton understand the benefits of cloud computing and the different types of services available.

  4. Students read the case study independently.

  5. After they finish reading, introduce the Cloud Solution Proposal handout and instruct them to work in pairs to discuss and complete the handout.

  6. Display slide 5 showing the instructions to complete handout. Circulate the class to observe students as they work and provide support as needed.

  7. After students have completed the handout, they will present their Cloud Solution Proposal to class. Students are expected to refer to the case study and how Data Webhosting Inc can solve Peyton’s business problem. Reference slides 6-8 to influence class discussion.

  8. Conclude lesson by posing the question: “Put yourself in Braden's shoes as a Web Developer. How will you explain to your entrepreneur-spirited friend why they need to understand cloud computing characteristics?” Students should write responses using the back of their proposal handout (slide 9).

  9. Collect reflections to gauge student understanding and for future lessons.

  • To prepare for this lesson, print student copies of the case study, student proposal template, and ensure that the teacher slideshow can be displayed throughout the lesson.
  • Based on students ability to work collaboratively and structure of your class, they may share a proposal handout or complete individually.
  • Consider supporting learning by displaying key concept definitions throughout the lesson, referring to them as needed (slides 10-11).
  • Extend learning asking students to explore how a hybrid cloud solution could benefit Peyton’s business (slide 12).
