  This lesson is designed to be used with the case study, “Project Management and the Environment. ” See CPALMS resource ID# 215745.

  This lesson challenges students to consider legal and ethical issues surrounding project management and waste disposal. Students will review Safety Data Sheets and discuss disposal requirements for hazardous resources/materials.

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, ask students to recall the definition of hazardous materials and the procedures for management of hazardous resources.
  2. Using a digital projector, find the most recent OSHA Brief Hazard Communication Standard: Safety Data Sheet (see Teacher Notes for website information). Students should have personal computers or devices open as well. Show students how to navigate to find the same document. Briefly, skim through the sections, focusing students' attention on the secions for Ecological Information and Disposal Considerations (see Teacher Notes). Briefly discuss these sections with the class. Ask the class, “What happens if we leave out one of the disposal process steps?” and “What would happen if we took a short cut?”
     • If individual student computers are not available, the teacher may print and make copies of the document and provide to students.
  3. Provide students with a copy of the case study, “Project Management and the Environment” (See CPALMS Resource ID # 215745). As students read the case study, ask them to consider the question “When does project management become unethical?” Ask students to annotate their page, underlining or highlighting information related to waste management, hazardous materials and waste disposal.
  4. After students have read the case study, ask the following discussion questions:
     • Why do you think John and Mike were not concerned about the discoloration of the ground and the water?
     • What do you think should have been done prior to the project starting to address waste and recycling?
     • Should Jenn have pressed the issue with John? What would she have said or done?
     • What do you think happened at the completion of this project?
  5. Wrap up the case study discussion by asking “How should the disposal of waste have been handled on this project?”
  6. Direct students to find a safety data sheet (SDS) online. See Teacher Notes for the recommended website information and how to search for current and various SDS sheets. Students may select different SDS Sheets. Ask students to share information from their chosen SDS Sheet. Briefly discuss the similarities and differences in the SDS Sheets.
     • If individual student computers are not available, the teacher may pre-select safety data sheets from either website resource, print, make copies and distribute to the class. Suggestion: Select two to three safety data sheets that expose students to different safety procedures and issues.
  7. To bring the lesson to a close, direct students to choose one of the SDS Sheets on the recommended website. Using the disposal information in the chosen SDS, ask students to create a step-by-step disposal plan for the product. Ask students to share their plans with the class. Have students turn in their plans at the end of the class.
  8. To close, review the guiding questions as a class and allow time for students to share their safety procedure plans with the rest of the class.

  • In Step 6, have students visit www.airgas.com. Show students how to find and select the link SDS searc menu. Have students select one of the listed SDS sheets. Students may select different SDS Sheets.

  • To save time, use the www.airgas.com or the www.osha.gov site, to pre-select the SDS Sheets to review with students.

  • Alternative suggestions:
    • Divide students into groups of three. Assign one student to be the project manager. Ask each group to create a disposal plan. Display the disposal plan on poster board. Have the project manager present the group’s plan. Have the other groups critique each plan.
