Students will use their knowledge of best practices to address student achievement and develop guidelines for establishing activities, routines, and transitions for children in the classroom to maximize student success.

• Procedure

  
  
  1. Have students review their prior knowledge of best practices of establishing activities, routines, and transitions for children. As students, “How can educators establish routines and transitions for young children?”
  2. Provide students with the Dena’s Daycare handout (see attachments; PPT format). Students will use the KWL on the handout to write down their ideas from the introductory brainstorm on the K section.
  3. Provide students with the case study, “Dena’s Daycare,” (see CPALMS Resource ID #215752).
  4. Ask students to read the case study, instruct them to underline and highlight important information about the classroom activities, routines, and transitions for day 1 and for day 2.
  5. After reading the case study, group students and have them complete the T chart (labeled day 1 and day 2 on the provided handout). Students will compare day one and day two activities, routines, and transition and chart their finding on the T-chart.
  6. Pose the following questions about the case study.
     • What best practices for learning environments are referenced in the case study?
     • How could learning these best practices help the educator and the students?
     • What could the educator do to develop guidelines for establishing activities, routines, and transitions for children?
     • Was Day 1 or Day 2 most effective for activities, routines, and transitions?
     • What do the observations tell you about Day 1? Day 2?
  7. Next, students will write out questions and wonderings pertaining to activities, routines, and transitions on the W part of the KWL.
  8. Provide students time to them use the internet to research their questions, writing their notes on the provided pages of the handout. Instruct students to visit reliable and credible resources for their research. For example, early childhood organization websites or early learning coalition websites. Instruct students to research at least three strategies or approaches that educators can use to establish appropriate activities, routines, and transitions for young children.
     • Students will discuss their W questions in small groups, work together to answer each other’s questions based on their research. Then, as a whole group, discuss topics that each small group is still wondering about and have the teacher address any misconceptions.
  9. To close the lesson, students will then reflect upon their own learning by completing the L part of the KWL chart and share with the class.

  Extension Idea:

  1. Students can provide written suggestions to Ms. Bonnie on her next steps. Pretend to be Ms. Lacey and give Ms. Bonnie two suggestions for the activities, routines, or transitions. Have students use evidence from the case study and their notes to provide justification for each.
