• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher will initiate a discussion with the students by displaying the terms and their definitions, peer pressure and bullying. Terms and definitions may be displayed on a whiteboard.
  2. Engage students in a discussion about what bullying and peer pressure look like in the workplace.
     • Sample discussion questions:
       • What is the importance of having guidelines and policy in the workplace?
       • How can peer pressure and bullying affect the work performance of an employee?
  3. Distribute the bullying sections of your school district's employee/faculty handbook and the same from the student/school handbook. (See Teacher Notes)
     • Distribute the comparison charts to students.
     • Have students compare the employee handbook to the student handbook.
     • Students will use the comparison chart to record their responses.
     • Students will share their responses with the class.
  4. Arrange students in groups of four and distribute the case study, “It’s the Environment,” (see CPALMS Resource ID#215741) and set the purpose of the lesson.
  5. Have the students read the case study individually.
  6. Then, instruct students to work as group to create narrative outcome for the case study. Explain to students the expectations of the writing include the use of dialogue between characters and academic language such as bullying and social skills.
     • Arrange students in groups of four for this activity.
     • Have groups choose a character from the case study to write an outcome for.
     • Have one person from each group share the group's outcome.
  7. To bring the lesson to a close, students will submit a written reflection on how to handle conflict in the work setting. Students may use information from the employee handbook as a point of reference. A few questions to start the discussion are below.
     • How would you handle conflict in the work setting?
     • How can you self-advocate?
     • How do you foster and maintain healthy relationships in the school setting and the work setting?

  • Refer only to the bullying sections of the employee and student handbooks. Make copies ahead of time. The Employee Handbook may describe a harassment or bullying policy. Use bullying if that is evident.
