• Procedure

  
  
  1. To begin this lesson, hand out the case study, “Maintaining Patient Confidentiality,” (See CPALMS resource ID# 215729), and have students work with shoulder partners to read it, identify and highlight possible HIPAA Violations, and highlight and discuss new or keyvocabulary words.
  2. Next, have students work with their shoulder partner to role-play the scenario as written in the case study. After role-playing, partners should work together to complete the Guiding Questions handout:
     • What type of training do RN go through to learn about patient confidentiality?
     • Is it ok for Linda the nurse to be curious about why Kimberly’s grandmother is in the hospital?
     • Can Linda text her friend to let her know she saw her grandmother?
     • What is the difference between a Health Care Advocate and Power of Attorney?
     • Was there a situation in the case study where Linda complied with HIPAA Law?
     • Other than the chart, how could Linda obtain patient information?
     • Who does Ethel ask for an update on her mother?
     • What acceptable ways can a healthcare provider give updates on his or her assigned patients?
  3. After completing the Guiding Questions handout, have partners role play the scenario again, this time making sure to comply with HIPPA laws. After role-playing, have students orally present what changes they made to comply with HIPPA and why those changes are important.
  4. To bring this lesson to a close, have students answer the reflection question individually.
