  Artificial Intelligence and its uses are growing in society. Experts and politicians are increasingly calling for regulation and a better understanding of how A.I. is being used. Students will one day be the decision makers in their careers and in our society. This lesson plan introduces the topic of A.I. and helps them explore potential generational differences with people accepting this technology.

  • Discuss how Artificial Intelligence as an innovative technology potentially impacts society with respect to economic, social, and cultural components.
  • Discuss ethical considerations when adopting a new technology like Artificial Intelligence.

  • Customer Service Phone Prompts
  • Phone Tree

  While not essential, students should be aware of what Artificial Intelligence is, and how it works. This can be discussed through the Turing Test, and a one-page synopsis is provided as an attachment to this lesson. Also, students may not have experience with a customer service phone tree. Another attachment to this document has been provided that provides an overview of current day issues with phone trees. However, during this lesson, students will be divided into groups to research the following terminology before beginning discussion on the case study.

  1. What are come ethical considerations society should take when creating/implementing AI?
  2. In the case study scenario, were there ethical issues with the use of the technology to answer a customer service phone call?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. As students enter the classroom, they will be provided with a blank piece of paper with instructions on the board to get started at the bell. Students will be asked to write down what they know about Artificial Intelligence and if they have ever heard of it before. They will be asked to write down what they believe Artificial Intelligence is capable of doing.
  2. After a couple of minutes, the teacher will divide the classroom into three groups through a method of their choosing. (You could divide them by having them count off in three’s, give rows or columns a specific question, or write the number at the top of the blank paper before handing out the sheet). Assign each group one of the three topics; Artificial Intelligence, Turing Test, and Customer Service Phone Tree. If an Internet search is not possible, then the guides attached can be used as substitutes.
  3. After 5 minutes of research time, students should read the case study. Since this lesson is designed for 11^th and 12^th graders, allow the students time to read the case study on their own. This lesson could be adapted for ESE and students with accommodations by having the teacher or fellow students read the case study out loud to them. Allow approximately 10 minutes for the case study to be read independently. Students should be encouraged to make notes or identify key concepts or ideas on their blank piece of paper. It may be useful to start a timer visible to students during the reading of the case study.
  4. Whole class discussion follows the reading of the case study. The teacher should use the questions below, but allow the class discussion to guide a richer discussion of the topic when available.
     1. Open the discussion of the case study by asking students what they thought of the case study.
        1. Is it realistic? Could this happen?
        2. Has any student had to make a customer support call? How did it go?
        3. Do you think you would be able to tell if you were talking to a computer-generated customer service?
     2. Turn the questions to technology and generational differences.
        1. Is Lucas pro-technology?
        2. Is Joe pro-technology?
        3. What evidence do that have in the text of the case study?
     3. Is Joe’s opinion of technology familiar to them? Family?
        1. Would they characterize themselves as more like Lucas or more like Joe?
        2. Do they think Joe approved or disapproved of A.I. answering his call and taking his questions?
     4. Is this a positive or negative example of A.I. use? Is there evidence for either? Do you think the A.I. should be required to reveal itself.
     5. How would you react to a call like this?
     6. The last question posed to students will be answered and turned into the teacher on the blank sheet of paper students have been writing on. The question is: “Was this use of A.I. in the case study ethical? If yes, how so? If no, why not?
     7. What fields of engineering work in A.I.? Any students interested in working in A.I. fields?
     8. Closing activity: Ask students to write their personal feelings about technology like Artificial Intelligence and wether they are excited or scared by its potential. Have them write this at the bottom of the plank piece of paper

  • There are two attachments along with the case study (CPLAMS ID# 215710) used in this lesson. While students will be researching the three terms for understanding, you may want to use the handouts to explore the Turing Test and Customer Service Phone Tree if searching or using the Internet is not an option. Understanding Artificial Intelligence may need to be a whole group discussion.
  • You may wish to find a YouTube video of a customer service phone tree or an audio asset to use. Make certain to preview the asset prior to letting students hear the asset. Videos may be intended for an adult audience with questionable language for students to hear.
