  • Create a summary graphic organizer to be completed with a cooperative learning group.
  • Explain how the attitude demonstrated by the main character in the case study affected his behaviors .
  • Write an alternate narrative for a case study scenario.

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, ask students to generate a word list on a sheet of chart paper. (See Teacher Notes for grouping)
     • Ask students to brainstorm all the words and ideas they associate with positive and negative behaviors in the classroom.
     • The groups will post their chart paper on the wall around the classroom. Ask each group to share their responses.
     • Students return to their seats after each group has shared their responses.
  2. Engage students in a discussion about negative and positive behaviors. Connect the idea of the importance of positive behaviors in school and the home environment.
     • Sample discussion questions:
  • • • How important is our attitude? (define attitude if necessary)
      • What is considered a positive behavior in school and at home? What effect might positive behaviors have in school and at home?
      • What is considered a negative behavior in school and at home? What effect might negative behaviors have in the school and at home?
  3. Distribute case study and define the purpose of the lesson. The purpose of the lesson is to show the connection between attitude and behaviors.
     • Have each individual student read the case study, “Family Creations through Interactions” (CPALMS Resource ID#215722). Students are to remain in cooperative learning groups.
     • After reading the case study, discuss the following questions with the students:
       • Why do you think Levi rarely visited his grandparents?
  • • • What inferences can you make about Levi sharing his experiences on the farm with his parents?
  4. After students have read the case study, tell the students that they will complete a summary graphic organizer with their cooperative learning group.
     • Distribute a copy of the summary graphic organizer (see attachments) to each cooperative learning group. Ask students to identify central idea caused by the attitude of the main character in the case study, “Family Creations through Interactions.” In the middle of the summary graphic organizer should be the identified central idea. The four boxes on the summary graphic organizer should include relevant details..
     • Call on each group to share their response.
  6. Discuss with students Levi’s attitude and how his attitude on the first day affected his behaviors. Ask students, “What might have happened if Levi had a more positive attitude about visiting his grandparents?”
  7. Next, have students use writing paper or a journal to rewrite the case study scenario, giving Levi a more positive attitude. Students should write at least two paragraphs, making sure that the scenario is in logical order, includes dialogue between Levi and his grandparents and adds descriptions of the events taking place.
  8. To bring the lesson to a close, students will discuss the following questions.
     • In the future, how might you attitude affect you as an adult in your career?
     • What are some positive behaviors to demonstrate at school? What are some positive behaviors you see working adults demonstrate?

  • For this lesson, students should be in groups of 4. Assign roles to students: reporter, timekeeper, facilitator, and harmonizer. Divide the class in half and assign one half positive behaviors and the other half, negative behaviors.
  • Explain to students the purpose of a summary graphic organizer. Summary are graphic organizers help students organize their thoughts to find the main idea and supporting details of a literary text.
