  • Explain the importance of maintaining safe and sanitary work procedures.
  • Evaluate quality of services and the experience of customers.

  • Why is it important to value sanitary practices when providing health services?
  • How can we ensure sanitary compliance when workload may be imbalanced?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, pose the following question to the class: ”When receiving cosmetology services (barber, nails, make up, etc), what do you value more, quality of skill or quality of sanitation?"
     • If time permits, allow students to share out to the whole group and briefly examine the rationale for their responses.
  2. Transition into the case study by informing students that they will examine a case study that relates to employing safe and sanitary practices.
  3. Provide students with a copy of the case study, “Germed By The Derm” (See CPALMS Resource ID# 215704).
  4. As students read the case study, instruct them to annotate their page, including underlining and highlighting any important information related to safety or sanitation.
  5. After proving ample time for students to read the case study, pose the following questions:
     • What were some instances in the scenario that exhibited an unsafe or unsanitary work environment?
     • What advice would you provide to Gary in order to balance his workload?
     • Why is it important to value sanitary practices when providing health services?
  6. Distribute Student Handout 2 to the class.
  7. Inform students that they will identify and then solve at least three problems based on issues found in the case study.
     
     • If time permits, allow students the opportunity to share to the whole group or discuss with a partner.
  8. Next, students will be asked to create an infographic or poster that Gary( the subject of the case study) could hang in his shop to reinforce safe and sanitary practices.
     • The teacher should decide if students will create the project digitally or on paper (template located in Student Handout 1).
     • If time permits, allow students to display their work within the classroom.
  9. To bring the lesson to a close, students will answer the exit slip question (located in Student Handout 1) “How does utilizing proper sanitation impact customer satisfaction?”
