  1. To introduce the lesson, students will complete the Career Habits and Attitudes Relating to Safety Worksheet. Students will fill out the worksheet by writing how safety can be involved in a situation for each career habit and attitude. Have students share their answers in small groups or as a whole class (See teacher notes for timing).

  2. Engage students in a discussion about safety precautions in a workplace, school, home, and public space.

  • Sample discussion questions:
  • What types of safety precautions are needed in a landscaping business?
  • Why is it important to follow safety precautions?
  • What happens if you do not follow safety precautions?
  • If you do not follow the correct safety precautions, how might that affect career success?
  • How can career habits and attitudes relate to being safe in the workplace?

  3. Provide the students with a copy of the case study “Growing Safely” (See CPALMS Resource ID #215740). As students read the case study, instruct them to annotate their page, underlining and highlighting important information about Safety precautions that were taken into consideration and safety precautions that were not taken into consideration.

  4. Prose the following discussion questions as a whole group discussion after reading the case study (See teacher notes for other options).

  • What are some safety precautions that Mateo and Christian took?
  • What are some safety precautions that Mateo and Christian could have taken?
  • What types of protective gear would a landscaper use?
  • Do you use protective gear in other jobs? Explain.
  • How do safety precautions and career habits connect?
  • What career attitudes and habits could have helped Christian and Mateo?
  • What are some career habits and attitudes that connect with safety precautions?

  5. Introduce the activity by explaining to the students that they will be working together in their groups to create a digital presentation based on the case study, “Growing Safely.” Explain each part of the Guide/Checklist/Rubric that students need to include in their digital source project.

  6. Divide students into groups of four. The students will work in their groups to create a digital source to emphasize the relevance of safety regulations of a hands-on job.

  • Students can choose to create a presentation, website, padlet, online book, etc. Students will pick three safety precautions that Christian or Mateo did or could have used in the case study for a landscaping career.
  • They will write the safety precaution and explain what is needed for that safety precaution. They also must include one career habit or attitude the character did or could use for that safety precaution.
  • Students also must include a picture and an appropriate video of someone modeling that safety precaution (See teacher notes on how to introduce the project).

  7. To conclude the lesson, each group will present these digital safety precaution projects to the class.

  • After all students have presented their projects, students can answer the following reflection question on a sticky note or a piece of paper:
  • How can you apply one of these safety precautions to your life?

  • The introduction to the lesson should be at most 5 minutes.
  • After the case study is read, some other options instead of whole group discussion is the teacher can put the questions on the board and students can discuss in their groups. Then there can be a whole class discussion. If the teacher would like the responses recorded, students can write their answers to the questions on a piece of paper.
  • This lesson may be easier to divide into two class periods. One day can be spent reading and discussing the case study and starting the digital project. The second day can be spent working on the final touches of the digital safety precaution project and presenting the projects.
