  In this lesson, students will identify the roles and responsibilities that board members have to fulfill within an organization and understand how these roles contribute to the effectiveness of organizational functioning. This lesson will enable students to learn about different board positions, role-play those board positions while making organizational decisions, and how these roles collectively help the organization to function better.

  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of different board members.
  • Identify different positions that are required to form an effective board.
  • Present information orally in logical progression with coherent focus while role-playing.
  • Write a reflection on what you can do to improve that role.

  • an organizational board, why it is formed and needed
  • various roles and positions within an organizational board

• Guiding Questions

  
  
  1. Why does an organization need to create a board?
  2. What positions do you think are necessary for board members at Kids of Kathmandu?
  3. Which is more important: creating board positions, or defining the roles and responsibilities of board members? Who defines these?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. The teacher will begin the class by asking, "Why is an organizational board important?" Students will share their perspectives. After this, the teacher will ask, "What are the different positions on the organizational board?"
  2. The teacher will write on the board all the positions mentioned by the students. If similar positions come up, the teacher will merge them and explain thinking to the students.
  3. Following this, the teacher will introduce the case study, "An Effective Organizational Board," and distribute it individually to each student.
  4. Divide the class into groups of 5-6 students. Teacher will instruct each group to identify 5-6 key positions required for KOK’s board members. The team will then decide who in the group will perform each role.
     
     If students are unable to decide on the positions, teachers can suggest the following positions: Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Fundraising Director, Education Director, Communication Director.
     
     
  5. Each group will role play a board meeting scenario where they discuss a strategic decision: How to manage the expansion of school-building projects in Nepal?
  6. Groups need to discuss their roles, plan how to utilize their skills effectively, and make decisions on the recruitment of new board members to fill gaps in their organization.
  7. Each group will present a brief summary of their role play. Teacher will request students to share:
     • What roles do their groups have and why?
     • What new position did they consider important and why did they think it was necessary?
  8. Teacher will hand out the attached worksheet ”Me and my responsibility.” Ask students to write down answers to the following questions:
     • What role did you play, and what was the significance of your role in the organization?
     • What did you learn from the role-play about strategic relationship among several members in the board?
