  This lesson will help students learn about personal finance. They will learn the importance of creating financial plans for both personal and professional growth and learn to perform financial calculations. Students will learn to work individually, in pairs, and in groups to generate solutions, and they will have the opportunity to present their findings through digital presentations.

  Students will be able to:

  • Describe how money management relates to personal and professional goals.
  • Analyze real-world scenarios.
  • Calculate savings, interest, income, etc. while creating a financial plan.
  • Prepare a digital presentation with a financial plan based on the case study scenario.

• Prior Knowledge

  
  

  Students should be familiar with:

  • Financial terms like income, expenses, assets, liabilities, and investments.
  • Creating budgets and performing financial calculations.
  • Using spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, particularly if they will be required to enter data, use formulas, and create graphs during the lesson.
  • Creating and delivering digital presentations, using software like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

  1. Should Aastha consider liquidating any of her assets? Why? Why Not?
  2. What strategies can individuals use to ensure financial stability during this transitional period?
  3. Is Aastha facing any financial risks, and how might she mitigate them?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. The teacher will distribute the attached worksheet ” Match the Following” to the students to fill out individually and ask them to complete the match in the following section.
  2. The teacher will then ask students to share their answers. If there are differing answers, the teacher will facilitate a discussion to explain why those answers are correct or incorrect.
  3. After this, the teacher will introduce the case study resource # 215393 “Money Matters” to the class. Students will read the case individually. After finishing the reading, the teacher will ask:
     • Why is financial management important for personal and career goals?
  4. The teacher will introduce the attached “Financial Planner” worksheet and ask students to work in pairs.
     • This activity would be ideal if all students have access to computers so they can use formulas to calculate the numbers. If computer access is unavailable, the teacher will provide printed copies of the sheet and ask students to enter manually and calculate the data.
  5. Once students have completed the worksheet in pairs, the teacher will form groups of 4-6 students. Each group will act as a financial planner and develop answers on what Aastha should do. They will create a digital presentation and will be encouraged to include the following elements:
     • Display Aastha's financial position using graphs or diagrams.
     • Propose Plan A and Plan B for Aastha, discussing why they believe these strategies are the best ways for Aastha to grow personally and professionally.
  6. To bring the lesson to a class have a class discussion on the following:
     • Why is financial management important for personal and career goals?
     • How can money management help you achieve a personal goal?
     • How can it help you achieve a goal in your future career?

  • This may need to split into two class periods to provide students with ample time to create their PowerPoint and present their findings.
  • As an extension, after all presentations have been completed, the class can vote for one or two presentations and discuss why the advice from those groups is more appealing.
