  This lesson is designed to be used with the case study, “Building a Stronger Academy.” See CPALMS resource ID#215282.

  In this lesson students will practice skills such as collaboration, planning, locating information, and organization as they work together to create the roles and responsibilities for childcare team members for a local daycare. Students will then role-play as the new director and present the roles and responsibilities to the staff in a digital presentation.

  Students will be able to:

  • Identify roles and responsibilities for team members of a childcare center.
  • Compare the roles and responsibilities of team members of a childcare center.
  • Create a digital presentation as the director running a staff-meeting to address necessary changes in order to improve the quality of childcare at their center.

  • Importance of quality childcare and the benefits for children, parents, and the community.

  • What roles need to be filled in order for a daycare center to provide quality childcare?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, students will discuss with the group what they already know about team members in a childcare center such as credentials needed, certifications, roles, responsibilities, etc.
  2. Teacher should introduce guiding questions and discuss as a class.
  3. Pass out the case study, "Building a Stronger Academy," see CPALMS resource ID 215282. Students should read the case study individually before discussing the following questions as a class:
     • What could Cristina do differently as the owner to improve the quality of childcare at Sunshine and Bubbles Academy?
     • What has Briana found from her conversations with staff, parents, and the online reviews?
     • How can Briana address the issues at Sunshine and Bubbles Academy to improve the quality of childcare and increase enrollment?
     • How will improving quality of childcare at Sunshine and Bubbles Academy benefit the chidlren, parents, and community?
  4. Students will work in groups to create an organization chart with roles and responsibilities for each team member at Sunshine Bubbles and Academy.
  5. Groups will create a digital presentation for a "staff meeting" from the perspective of Briana, the new director. The digital presentation should include the items on the attached Staff Meeting Presentation Checklist.
  6. Students will then role-play as the director Briana to present and run the staff meeting.
  7. To bring the lesson to a close, have the students discuss the following questions as a class:
     • How did your group (as Briana) attempt to improve the quality of childcare at Sunshine and Bubbles Acadmy?
     • How will this benefit the children, parents, and community?
     • What skills and knowledge did you gain from this experience?
     • How can you use those skills or knowledge in your career in Early Childhood Education?

  • This lesson could be extended to provide groups with adequate time for creating their digital presentations, and presenting their "staff meeting" presentation to the class.
