• Guiding Questions

  
  
  • What are the factors that a student could consider when deciding their program of study?
  • How could a student decide what factors are most important to consider when considering a program of study?
  • What are some of the possible careers in the public health field?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, conduct a class poll. Present “Class Poll: How Many Years?” See attached presentation with speaker notes. There are 2 available versions for a student handout (See slides 7 or 8).
     • Discuss what students already know about the different types of degrees that are available post high school.
  2. Distribute the attached research guide. Students may use page 1 of the research guide to take notes. Review the results with students and continue the discussion by posing the question, “What is the relationship between educational achievement and career choices?”
  3. Provide students with the case study, “What’s Next?” (See CPALMS Resource 215303). Review important content vocabulary related to the case study, such as Career, Program of Study, Professional Degree, Graduate Program. Have students write the meanings of the words in the margins.
  4. Have students read the case study independently or with a partner.
  5. After students finish reading, pose and discuss the following discussion questions as a class (see pages 1-2 of the research guide):
     • What are the factors that a student could consider when deciding their program of study?
     • How could a student decide what factors are most important to consider when considering a program of study?
     • What are some of the possible careers in the public health field?
  6. Put students into small groups to conduct research and to create presentation slides about a specific career in health. See pages 3-4 in the attached research guide.
  7. Either allow students to select a career in health or assign a career.
     • Please refer to the “Career in Health,” table for possible careers on page 5 of the research guide.
  8. Assist students with navigating to the correct websites. If needed, provide students with search terms to help locate the information they need.
     • Students may refer to “Online Resources and Links,” provided on page 6 of the research guide.
  9. Provide students time to research and create their presentations.
  10. Have students present their research findings to the class. As students present, have students who are listening complete the “Pro and Cons” graphic organizer provided on pages 7-8 in the research guide.
  11. To promote further conversation, as a class, have students share their reflections and thoughts.
  12. To bring the lesson to a close, have students reflect on the following questions:
      • How can researching educational pathways help you plan your career?
      • What are the most important factors for you to consider when planning for your future education and career?

  • Students may need additional time to complete research. This lesson can be extended over additional days as needed.
  • You may assign certain educational/ career pathways or have the students select their own path to research.
  • “Career in Health” table is provided in the research guide for possible careers in the research guide.
  • Use the "Printer Friendly" option to print summaries of job summaries from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics: Occupational Outlook Handbook.
  • A table of “Online Resources and Links,” is provided in the research guide and the student presentation template.
