  • Unit Outline

    This lesson is designed to be used with the case study, "We Go: Balancing Growth and Challenges" See CPALMS resource ID 215104.

  • Career Connection

    This lesson will help students acquire the skills to pursue a career in any business field, particularly in the service-based industry, enabling them to make informed decisions when major changes occur in business. Students will learn the different functions in business in a group setting and give presentations proposing solutions.

  • Learning Objectives

    Students will be able to:

    • Explain the roles of management in small business.
    • Define the core functions of management.
    • Work in group to discuss issues and present the information.
  • Prior Knowledge

    It will be beneficial if students have a basic understanding of business planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling.

  • Guiding Questions

    1. What strategies can a small business implement to ensure their business adapts quickly to a change in the business?
    2. How can We Go effectively manage the transition of Sarad and Bhushan away from daily management while ensuring the continued growth and success of the business?
    3. How can We go maintain client satisfaction and continue to attract new clients?
  • Procedure

    1. The teacher will begin class with a review of the key elements of management:

    • Planning
    • Organizing
    • Staffing
    • Directing
    • Controlling

    The teacher will, in advance, write the guiding questions on the flipchart for students to use as discussion starters, where they will try to connect guiding questions with the terms discussed.

    2. Introduce the case study: "We-Go: Balancing Growth and challenges".

    - Distribute case study handouts to each student.

    3. Divide the class into four groups. Each group will discuss one of the following questions:


    Group 1: What challenges will We-Go face, when Sarad and Bhushan step away from day-to-day management, and how should the team address these challenges?

    Group 2: How can Mr. Ambir and Mr. Saigrace adapt their roles to ensure the successful continuation of the business?

    Group 3: What changes in the management structure might be needed for "We-Go" to continue growing?

    Group 4: How can "We-Go" maintain a balance between employee motivation and profit?

    Provide each group with markers and flipchart sheets for brainstorming and presenting ideas.

    4. Group Presentations:

    - Each group will present their findings based on their assigned discussion question.

    The teacher will encourage questions and comments after each presentation.


    5. At this point with so many ideas floating,the teacher will categorize student responses into different sections on the board. Categories can include:

    • Effective Management in Overcoming Challenges
    • Ensuring Business Sustainability
    • Importance of Flexibility and Adaptability

    This will help students synthesize overarching concepts and share their ideas more effectively.


    6. Have students write a brief reflection, using attached “Reflection Worksheet”. The student will select one management lesson they learned from the case study that to develop personally, which will also help them in their future careers.

  • Teacher Notes

    • Prepare markers and flipchart sheets for brainstorming and presenting ideas.
    • Reflection assignment could be done outside of class or during another class period and also that this lesson could be split into two class periods.
