• Procedure

  
  

  1. To introduce the lesson, review important vocabulary from the case study, What it Feels Like to be Beth.” See CPALMS Resource ID# 215373. Important vocabulary may include but is not limited to, thoughtfulness/empathy, confidence, self-respect, self-care, setting boundaries, self-control, respect for others, and interpersonal relationships.

  • To activate prior learning, project or write on the board ‘attitude,’ ‘behavior,’ and interpersonal relationships. Ask students to work in pairs (Partner Talk) and allow them two (2) minutes to discuss the meaning of each word and how they have used them in their past experiences. After the initial discussions, ask students to share how situations impact their attitudes and behaviors.

  2. Before the students read the case study, pose the following discussion questions. Pairs should be given adequate time to answer the questions. Answers may be recorded on flashcards, sticky notes, or other suitable means for pairs to share with the entire class.

  • Why is it important to establish and maintain appropriate interpersonal relationships?
  • What attitudes and behaviors are appropriate for establishing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships?
  • How can you evaluate/monitor your attitude and behaviors to establish and maintain appropriate interpersonal relationships?

  3. Provide pairs of students with the attached Situation Analysis Template for them to complete while reading the case study. As students discuss their answers in pairs, monitor them to ensure they are presenting their argument(s) in logical organization with coherent focus based on evidence from the case study, creating a clear perspective.

  • After students have completed the Situation Analysis Template, review the answers with the entire class.
  • Clarify any misconceptions/misunderstandings as needed.

  4. To bring the lesson to a close, have students reflect on the following questions on an exit ticket:

  What are the learned lessons from the case study that you can use to improve your interpersonal relationships?

  How can maintaining interpersonal relationships benefit you in the future?

  • Attitude refers to a person’s belief and emotions about a particular person, object, or situation. Attitudes are typically long-lasting and shaped by an individual’s life experience, they are unique to each person. Examples may include being optimistic, pessimistic, etc. Please note that a person may also experience a mixed attitude towards a particular person, object, or situation.
  • Behavior refers to a person’s actions towards a particular person, object, or situation, which is observable. A person’s behavior may be innate (instinct) or learned (nurtured). Behavior may be impacted by environmental, biological, and or psychological factors. Examples of behavior may include being helpful, sociable, tolerant, argumentative, disrespectful, or dismissive.
  • Students may need additional time to read and process the case study.
  • Consider using role-play. This will allow students to understand the different attitudes and behaviors associated with each interaction and how changes can impact developing and maintaining friends.
