  This lesson will help students with the skills to pursue a career in any business field, particularly in the tourism sector, enabling them to make informed decisions that enhance customer satisfaction and profit of business. Students will learn to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a business with regard to customer satisfaction, work and present collaboratively in groups.

• Learning Objectives

  
  

  Students will be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of customer satisfaction and guest experience.
  2. Identify new strategies to satisfy the customers especially in tourism industry.
  3. Identy the strengths and weaknesses of a business with regard to customer satisfaction.
  4. Present their explanation verbally, with a logical organization, based on the group discussion.

  It will be beneficial for students to be familiar with:

  1. The basic concepts of management, particularly tourism management.
  2. The fundamental understanding of an organization's strengths and weaknesses.
  3. Basic knowledge about Nepal and the significance of tourism to its economy.

• Guiding Questions

  
  
  1. Why is it important to prioritize the customer experience in the tourism industry?
  2. Why is it crucial to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your business for better guest experience?
  3. How can you maximize profits or minimize losses in business operations without compromising the guest overall experience?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. The teacher will start the class by displaying several pictures of Nepal.
     • Teachers should prepare 5-7 images in advance, including Mount Everest, the location of Everest base camp, tea houses, potters, and tourists at Mount Everest. As each picture is shown, the teacher will ask students to share their thoughts on what they see.
  2. Following this visual introduction, the teacher will pose a question to the students:
     • If you were traveling to Everest base camp, what facilities would you want to enhance your experience?
     • A few students will be asked to share their ideas, and others will be encouraged to either add to or disagree with their peers' suggestions.
  3. The teacher will distribute printed copies of the case study, “Camera Voyages” (See CPALMS Resource ID 214932), for individual reading. After the reading, the teacher will lead a discussion by asking:
     • How would you feel if you were part of this trip? Would you be satisfied with the services provided?
     • The teacher will allow a few responses to be shared.
  4. Pass out the attached worksheet titled, “Strength and weakness.“ Divide the class into groups and assign each group either strength or weakness. Each group will discuss at least five strengths or five weakness, based on which group they are in. They will be prompted to consider:
     • Why is this a strength in regard to the customer experience and overall satisfaction?
     • Why is this a weakness in regard to the customer experience and overall satisfacton?
  5. After the discussion, the teacher will regather the class to share their findings. One person will share one strength or weakness and answer why. Have at least 10 students share ideas. After each presentation, non-presenting peers are encouraged to ask questions.
     • Throughout the presentation and discussion, all students will be encouraged to take notes.
  6. To close the lesson, the teacher will distribute the attached worksheet “This is What I Would Do” to each student individually. It asks them to write what they would do to enhance guest experiences and maintain profitability if they were managers of this business. This will be turned in and discussed in the next class period. Here students will be asked to:
     • Explain your strategy (at least 3) and why it would be effective in this case and similar situations.
     • Discuss whether this strategy would increase profit, reduce costs, or have no financial impact.
  7. This exercise is designed to help students grasp the core concepts, particularly the actions and activities needed to provide a good guest experience while running a profitable business.
