Unit Outline
This lesson is designed to be used with the case study, “Do I Have to Share?” See CPALMS resource ID# 214721.
-
Career Connection
Students will use their knowledge of methods of guidance of children’s behavior to create a developmentally appropriate learning activity. Students will be utilizing and practicing teamwork, colloboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity.
-
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Create a developmentally appropriate learning activity.
- Identify methods of guidance of children’s behavior at age-appropriate levels.
-
Prior Knowledge
Students should be familiar with:
- Planning a safe, clean, and healthy learning environment
- Appropriate methods of guidance
- How to use PowerPoint
- Have an understanding of the components of a lesson plan
-
Guiding Questions
- How can teachers effectively guide student behaviors?
- What factors should be considered when designing learning activities for young students, such as age, developmental stage, and individual needs?
-
Procedure
- To introduce the lesson, engage the students in a class poll. Students will reflect on the statement “It is easy to help a child learn to share.” (Rate on a scale of 1-5 with 1 being very not difficult and 5 being extremely difficult.) Teacher will then share the results and guide a brief discussion.
- Focus Discussion Question: What factors effected your decision to agree or disagree with the poll? (Students can consider their previous experiences with children, or their own experinces as a student).
- Pose the following discussion questions (either during reading, or before the activity if the case study has been read prior to this lesson):
- What strategies could teachers use with students to help guide their behavior?
- How could the teacher guide the students' behaviors?
- How could the teacher teach or reteach appropriate student behaviors in this scenario?
- What factors should be considered when designing learning activities for young students, such as age, developmental stage, and individual needs?
- Pair the students or place them into groups to design their own learning activity that addresses the concerns of the teacher and the students in the scenario.
- Students will begin by reading and analyzing the case study while considering the discussion questions.
- Students will then collaborate to create a developmentally appropriate learning activity for the young students from the case study who need extra guidance. Students should use the lesson plan template (provided) when planning their instruction.
- To bring the lesson to a close, students will turn their lesson plan activity into a digital presentation. The presentation will include the lesson plan template, learning activity, and answers to the reflection questions.
- Students should turn each section of the lesson plan template into a slide on their presentation.
- Students should reference a minimum of two specific methods of guidance directly correlated to the case study when designing their learning activity.
- At least one slide should be dedicated to answering the reflection questions.
- Reflection Questions:
- What strategies did you use to guide the students' behavior?
- What other strategies could you use with the students to help guide them if they continue to struggle?
- What factors did you consider when designing learning activities for the students?
- What makes a lesson successful?
- Reflection Questions:
- Students will present their digital presentation to the whole class.
- After group presentations, the teacher will guide a final discussion that revisits the poll from the beginning of class and guide students in discussing the practical real-world applications of this activity.
-
Teacher Notes
- Students may need additional time to complete presentation.
- You may want to have students present their learning activity and/or digital presentation.
