  This lesson can be used within a unit that familiarizes students with the Education and Training Career Cluster. Within the unit, students will research various career opportunities, describe training and education requirements, list the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in the career pathway and complete a project related to Education and Training careers. In this lesson, students will research careers within the Education and Training Career Cluster. The focus of the research is training requirements and skills required for a career, as well as identifying various places of employment for the careers.

  This lesson includes career building skills such as research, self-direction, and discernment as students are required to research, read, and collect credible and quality resources. This lesson also includes the skills of career planning and investigating. This lesson provides students with the opportunity to explore related career skills and determine if a career in Education and Training is a fit for them.

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, display the Education and Training Careers attachment using a document camera or projector. Ask students to name some individuals they know that have these careers.
     • Follow-up by asking students if they know what that person does for their career. A great example would be teachers; students will probably say that they teach, but you can add by telling them about the behind the scenes planning, grading, curriculum meetings, parent communication and so forth.
  2. As students look at the list of careers, ask them to choose one that is most interesting to them, or that they would like to know more about.
  3. Set the purpose for the lesson by providing students with the Education and Training Research Questions handout (see attachments). Explain to students that they will choose a career within the Education and Training Career Cluster to research and then create a poster presentation to share their research with the rest of the class.
     • Review the research questions together on the handout. Under each main question is a space for additional questions. This is to help guide student searches and research. As a class, brainstorm additional questions that might be helpful for students to investigate under each topic question. For example, under the question about training and education, an additional question might be, “How long, or how many years, does it take to become certified?” An additional question under the responsibilities question might be, “What tasks are people evaluated on in this career?”
  4. Provide students with time to gather their research. Teachers may choose to provide students with the Education and Training Research Graphic Organizer (see attachments).
     • Encourage students to find interesting facts, statistics, quotes, or graphics to enhance their presentations.
     • Remind students that the information will be transferred to a poster for a presentation or gallery walk.

  5. Once students have gathered their research, allow them time to create a poster presentation that showcases the career. Poster presentations should include the career title, answers to the research questions, a supporting feature (such as a graphic, image/drawing, chart, infographic and so forth), and proper spelling/grammar.

  6. To close the lesson, pair students and have them share their poster presentations and provide feedback to each other.

  • This lesson is part of a unit focused on the Education and Training Career Cluster. Teachers may choose to introduce the career cluster using CPALMS Resource ID# 207485. Resources #___ and #____ include the follow-up gallery walk lesson and a culminating project related to the Education and Training Career Cluster.
  • Teachers can choose to provide students with poster paper and crayons/markers or students can create their poster using an online tool or presentation software such as PowerPoint. Have students either turn in or share their poster presentations with the teacher at the end of class.
