• Unit Outline

  
  

  The unit focuses on leaders and leadership. With each lesson, students will build a presentation on leadership. For this third lesson in the series, students will write profiles for two leaders they selected from Lesson 2 and create two additional slides for their presentation. In the first lesson, students worked with a group to create a definition for leadership and designed a corresponding poster (slide) to illustrate their definition. For the second lesson in the series, students researched leaders in different industries and explained how the leaders fit the group’s definition of leadership. During the unit’s fourth lesson students will complete a presentation on leadership.

  Leadership is an essential life and career skill. It is important for students to learn about leadership while in school and as they prepare to enter the workplace. By discussing the characteristics of leaders and practicing leadership skills such as collaboration and communication, students can develop as aspiring leaders, who will positively impact their communities and respective industries.

  Students will be able to:

  • Write profiles for two leaders based on research of the leaders’ characteristics and responsibilities.
  • Design slides on two organizational leaders to add to the group’s leadership presentation.

  Students should:

  • Be familiar with the terms: leader, leadership, characteristic, responsibility.
  • Have experience with online research and synthesizing information.
  • Have experience using presentation software to collaborate with a group.

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To open the lesson, review the terms characteristic and responsibility with students.
  2. Students will review their graphic organizers from Part 2.
     • As a group, students will select two leaders that best fit their definition of leadership.
     • Students will write profiles on each leader to include in their leadership presentation.
  3. Display the sample template slides (see Teacher Slides- Slides 1 and 2) for students to see the information required on their slides. Remind students that each leader will have a slide. Students can choose how to arrange information on the slides and select from available designs in the presentation software.
     
     • Requirements for each leader profile:
       • Leader's Name
       • Leader's Picture
       • Picture to show characteristics
       • Picture to show responsibilities
       • Brief biography with the industry, name of the organization, and details about the characteristics and responsibilities
       • Connection to the group’s leadership definition.
  4. Students will work in groups to complete their two leader profile slides.
  5. To bring the lesson to a close, display and share the Leadership Exit Ticket using available technology (see Teacher Slides) with the guiding question, "What are common characteristics and responsibilities of leaders?"
     • Students will list 3 similar characteristics, 2 similar responsibilities, and 1 surprising fact about their leaders.

  • This lesson builds on the activity students completed in Part 2.
  • Students may need a review of reliable online sources.
  • The teacher can provide students with the sample templates. See Student Slides.
  • If technology is not available for the closing activity, students can complete their responses in their notebooks or on a sticky note.
  • Students may choose include their exit ticket slides in the completed leadership presentation.
  • If students are studying a specific industry, the teacher can adapt the lesson to have students research leaders in the same industry.

  • Students can complete a one-page biography on another leader from their graphic organizer.

  • Students can add a compare/contrast slide on the different leadership styles of their leaders.
