• Unit Outline

  
  

  The unit focuses on leaders and leadership. With each lesson, students will build a presentation on leadership. In this first lesson, students will work with a group to create a definition of leadership and design a corresponding poster (slide) to illustrate their definition. The next lesson will task students with researching leaders in different industries and explaining how the leaders fit the group’s definition of leadership. For the third lesson, students will write profiles for two leaders they selected and compare/contrast them to examine different types of leadership. During the unit’s fourth lesson students will complete the presentation on leadership.

  Leadership is an essential life and career skill. It is important for students to learn about leadership while in school and as they prepare to enter the workplace. By discussing the characteristics of leaders and practicing leadership skills such as collaboration and communication, students can develop as aspiring leaders, who will positively impact their communities and respective industries.

• Procedure

  
  

  1. To introduce the lesson, students will be in groups of 3-4 to complete a word web (brainstorming) for the word, leadership (Student Copy Slide 1).

  2. The teacher will display Slide 1 (Teacher Copy) on an interactive board and ask students to share some of the word associations and characteristics. The teacher will record student responses.

  • Students can add other students’ responses to their word webs.
  • The teacher will ask students which common characteristics they see.

  3. The teacher will display Slide 2 (Teacher Copy) and introduce the task to students. The teacher will tell students that each lesson will help them build their presentation.

  • Task: Students will create a 5-minute presentation on leadership.

  4. As a group, students will complete Part 1 of the presentation. See the Teacher Copy (Slides 3-4) for a sample template and poster.

  • Students will collaborate to create a definition for leadership based on their word webs and prior knowledge.
  • Students will use presentation software to design a poster with their definition for leadership and a visual that illustrates the definition.

  5. To bring the lesson to a close and preview Lesson 2, the teacher will distribute sticky notes and display Teacher Copy Slide 5.

  • Each student will write and complete the following sentence:
    • A leader who fits our description of leadership is ____________________ because he/she has _________________ and ________________ (list 2 characteristics).
  • Students will post sticky notes on chart paper with the title, Leadership, as they exit the class.

  • For the whole group share out, the teacher can have students come to the board to write responses or use student white boards to encourage more participation.
  • For the visual on the team’s poster, students can use clip art, photos, or draw. Students who choose to draw will need to take a picture to add the drawing to their slide.
  • If technology and materials are not available:
    • The group’s word web can be done on computer or chart paper.
    • The teacher can use a whiteboard or chart paper to capture whole group responses.
    • The teacher can provide students with index cards or slips of paper instead of sticky notes.

  Formative Assessment Ideas:

  • Students’ responses to the word, leadership, will allow the teacher to assess prior knowledge.
  • The teacher can observe and monitor students’ progress as they work in their groups.

  Accommodation Suggestions:

  • The teacher can share a word bank with students to assist them with the word web.
  • The teacher can provide students with a sentence stem to assist with writing the definition of leadership.

  Extension Ideas:

  • The teacher can create a word wall with students’ posters. Students can create posters for other abstract business concepts/soft skills such as teamwork or integrity.
