- Requires the student to select the correct version of a word or phrase to be used in a sentence.
- Requires the student to select the appropriate usage of grade-appropriate conventions.
- Requires the student to select the correct spelling of a word.
Items may ask the student to evaluate and correct errorsthat focus on grammar and usage or capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Items should assess on-grade-level errors; however, once a Language Standard is introduced, grade-appropriate items may be written to assess continued mastery ofstandard conventions of English.
Items assessing these standards will be used with a three- or four- paragraph text containing possible errors incapitalization, usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. The editing taskwill be similar to a student’s essay in quality and difficulty. The text should be accessible for the grade and should assess the student’s knowledge of grammar, usage, and language conventions. Texts will be between 200 and 250 words.
These standards will be assessed using the Editing Task Choice item type. Descriptions of these item types can be found in the Enhanced Item Descriptions section on page 3.

MEA Save Our Soccer Field | In this Model Eliciting Activity (MEA), students are given data on types of materials that stop erosion from water run-off. The students are to use their problem solving skills as well as prior science knowledge to create a procedure for choosing the right material. Model Eliciting Activities, MEAs, are open-ended, interdisciplinary problem-solving activities that are meant to reveal students’ thinking about the concepts embedded in realistic situations. MEAs resemble engineering problems and encourage students to create solutions in the form of mathematical and scientific models. Students work in teams to apply their knowledge of science and mathematics to solve an open-ended problem while considering constraints and tradeoffs. Students integrate their ELA skills into MEAs as they are asked to clearly document their thought processes. MEAs follow a problem-based, student-centered approach to learning, where students are encouraged to grapple with the problem while the teacher acts as a facilitator. To learn more about MEAs visit: https://www.cpalms.org/cpalms/mea.aspx |
Organism Classification Using a Dichotomous Key | This classification MEA provides students with a science problem in which they must create a dichotomous key and classify given organisms. The main focus of this MEA is the diversity of living organisms, as well as how they are classified. Model Eliciting Activities, MEAs, are open-ended, interdisciplinary problem-solving activities that are meant to reveal students’ thinking about the concepts embedded in realistic situations. Click here to learn more about MEAs and how they can transform your classroom. |
