Discussion of possible impacts on mental and physical abilities of the pilot will include weather (heat, humidity, overcast), diet (Has the person eaten recently? What did they have to eat? Could food allergies play a part?), medication (Has the person taken their medication or not? Are their side effects that could influence performance?), rest (Has the pilot gotten enough sleep? Does the pilot appear tired?), drug/alcohol use (Is the person under the influence?), stress (Is the pilot agitated or uneasy? Do the pilot's actions seem 'different' from their normal behavior?). |
Assemble the Design Team for Success | Using the case study, “Assemble the Design Team for Success”, students will describe a typical design team structure. Using the Engineering Design Team Roles handout, students will decide which roles on the list are need based upon the project in the case study. Students will also use the handout to identify the role for each of the individuals in the case study. Students will perform this work in pairs with the expectation that they will discuss their decisions with another pair group. Then, larger groups will be called upon in group discussion to present their decisions. |

Fundraising Activity | This lesson is part 2 in a series of 3 lessons where students determine a group or cause in need of funding, create a fundraising plan, and present their plan to a “board of directors.” In part 1, students researched and compared fundraising ideas from various sources, including their own experience with fundraising activities or events. Students also researched fundraising rules in the state of Florida to determine the necessary forms and information needed to legitimize their fundraisers. In this lesson plan, part 2, students will use their research to determine an innovative way to fundraise for their chosen group or cause and will prepare an outline and an oral presentation to be given in part 3 of the lesson series. |
A Proposal for Progress-"The Talented Tenth" | In this lesson, students will analyze excerpts from W.E.B. DuBois' 1903 essay “The Talented Tenth", which advocated for the advancement of African American people through increased access to higher education beyond vocational training. Their study of the text will focus on identifying and evaluating the support of the central ideas of the text. In groups, students will read the excerpts and examine the textual support for each central idea presented in the text. |

In part 4, students will work within their teams to create the three components of their presentations. Students will plan their oral presentation to the County Board of Commissioners as well as create a visual presentation and a written document. The teacher’s role will be to present the task, monitor student engagement, and provide feedback as the teams complete the three components of their portion of the plan. |
County Hurricane Emergency Management Plan (CHEMP) Part 5 | This 5-part student-centered activity places students in the role of a local emergency management team that is tasked by the County Board of Commissioners to develop a County Hurricane Emergency Management Plan (CHEMP). In parts 1-3, students conducted research and collaborated to create portions of the CHEMP. In part 4, teams prepared a presentation for the County Board of Commissioners. In part 5, each team will present their plan to the board. Each student will be scored using the rubric provided. |

Analyzing Themes and Story Elements in the Classic Love Story, "Pyramus and Thisbe" | "Pyramus and Thisbe" is a tragic love story in which two lovers are separated by forces seemingly beyond their control. This lesson guides students through an analysis of the story elements and how they function together to create a theme. A plot diagram helps students to analyze this classic story after the teacher models analysis using the familiar children’s story, Cinderella. Students will write a response analyzing how the plot elements and symbols develop the story's themes. |
The Past and the Future | The lesson introduces students to irony and how instances of irony in the piece of literature, "A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury, advances the plot. Students are exposed to examples of irony from other works of literature to assist them with irony. The summative assessment entails a written analysis of how the author incorporates instances of irony to further develop the plot. |
